Crucial Outcomes Either Way in Recall Elections in Wisconsin

Tomorrow is D-Day in Wisconsin.
Six Republican state senators are facing a recall election because they sided with Gov. Scott Walker in his vicious attack on labor rights.
If the Democrats win at least three of these races, they will recapture the state senate, so long as they hold on to the two Democratic state senators who face recalls of their own next week.
As it stands, the Democrats look like they will win two seats with relative ease, but the four remaining races are up for grabs.
The outcome is going to be crucial, either way.
If the Democrats win, they will be able to put the brakes on Walker’s runaway train. And they’ll set the stage for a huge confrontation with Walker six months from now, when he may have to face a recall himself, probably against none other than Russ Feingold.
And a Democratic win would send a signal to other Republican governors that they’ll pay a price if they follow Walker’s lead and try to destroy the right to organize or decimate public education, which Walker has also done.
And it’ll send the message that resistance works.
But if the Republicans prevail in these recall races, Scott Walker will feel vindicated, his star will rise nationally, and the message will go forward that you can crush labor with impunity, and your corporate backers will throw enough money on the airwaves to make sure that you stay in power.
That’s why the results tomorrow will reverberate well beyond the borders of the Badger State.
