Afghanistan Just Got Messier

By Matthew Rothschild, November 2, 2009

The mess that is Afghanistan just got messier for Washington.

Abdullah’s withdrawal from the presidential runoff leaves Hamid Karzai in power but without legitimacy.

He’s widely perceived to have rigged the last election, and Abdullah took himself out, he says, because he couldn’t be assured that Kazai wouldn’t do it again.

And then they cancelled the election with only Karzai in it, citing security and cost reasons. But maybe they didn’t want to deal with the embarrassment of Karzai running unopposed, or the even deeper humiliation of a tiny turnout.

As a result, though, Karzai has become further delegitimized.

He was already in the soup. People in Afghanistan recognize that he’s corrupt. And Malalai Joya, the outspoken feminist who was booted from parliament, has been denouncing him for years now for surrounding himself with drug lords and warlords and war criminals. Even his own brother is involved in the drug trade.

In Afghanistan, Joya says, Karzai is seen, correctly, as a Washington stooge. And we’re seen there, correctly, as an occupying power.

We’ve been down this road before.

In Vietnam, the United States propped up one illegitimate leader after another, but that didn’t help the war effort at all. It only further alienated the people of Vietnam.

We’re seeing the same thing happening in Afghanistan right now.

Karzai is our guy in Kabul, but that’s about it. Many if not most people in Afghanistan disdain him. And the more he plays ball with Washington, the less support he has at home.

The United States can’t defeat an insurgency by backing an illegitimate government.

And the United States can’t defeat an insurgency when the American people are already opposed to the war.

Obama needs to realize all this, reverse course, and head for the exits, before he makes matters even worse.

Ahh yes, Afghanistan, where all Empires go to die.
Now it's our turn.
320 million dollars a day in Fuel Cost, for our Marine Corp alone, according to the Congressional Record --- that should do the trick nicely towards that end.
One more time I give you the words of Reagan Administration Veteran Dr. Paul Craig Roberts, as he talks about such matters in the folowing link --

Hey -- But Liberal Anti War group "Code Pink", now supports the war, and I am sure we will find that Muti-Million dollar Bunker, that Cheney claimed Bin Laden was hiding in, any day now.
You remember, he was on TV showing us a diagram of it -- maybe there was one, and for that use in his presentation, Dick borrowed the Blueprints from Halliburton.
If all this was about supporting some type of American Empire, based on the Principles of our Founding Fathers, I might consider supporting it -- but I think Afghanistan is where they send Countries, that have outlived their "Usefulness", to get them out of the way and into "Receivership".
I had a Russian Friend that got to fight for his Empire over there. He had plenty of tales to tell me.
Of course his Empire was fighting people like Osama Bin Laden, who was armed to the teeth with arms bought by our government thru illegal drug proceeds, and not that "Dirty Old Taliban", who never the less seemed to get along fine with "W"'s crew when they visited his friends in Texas, prior to 9-11, to discuss something about a Pipe Line.
And besides, Bin Laden had a group of friends who
helped him fight those Ruskies -- our CIA named them
"The Base" or Al-Qaeda in the Native Tongue.
And Greg, turns out that Karzai's Opium growing brother was revealed recently to be on your CIA's payroll.

Hmmm -- who's Empire are we, I wonder ?
Who's Empire has made tons of cash , measured by the Pound , in recent historic times, dealing in Opium?
Maybe we could ask Colin Powell KCB , former Sec. Of State, etc. -- the KCB stands for "Knights Commander of the Order of the Bath" -- very well rewarded for his loyalties I'd say.
But still, he wasn't made "Royal Groom of the Stool", the duties (pun intended) of which, are still considered an honor to wipe the Royal's Butt. Officially the office has not existed
since 1901, but insiders have said it still exist.

That Honor and Title might go to Obama after
he has finished his current job and moves into the Ranks of the Real Government.
I don't know , he might have a chance at it.
All these guys have been practicing for that job on David Rockefeller, at the "Council on Foreign Relations", for years.
It's all about "The Great Work", you hear them in their Code Speak, whenever they are televised on C-Span giving speeches at the CFR.
Greg, here is one of your favorites at a CFR offshoot using Code Speak. They all know what is being discussed when the term "Great Work" is used.

Cheney of course has been David Rockefellers "Groom of the Stool" for years.
You remember David Rockefeller?-- that "Good Patriotic Republican" who said in his autobiography “Memoirs” wherein, on page 405," Mr. Rockefeller writes: “For more than a century ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents such as my encounter with Castro to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as "internationalists" and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure - one world, if you will. If that's the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it."

Man, you "Progressives" need to get "Hep" and join the Republican Party. David seems to be your sort of fellow.
But I suspect that David thought, that through the efforts of all his family's "Foundations", none of us would have the capacity to read anymore.
Here's the clincher for you -- In 1947, Rockefeller was invited onto the board of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace by its then president, Alger Hiss, later to be embroiled in a spy scandal; serving on the board were such figures as John Foster Dulles (chairman), Dwight D. Eisenhower and the president of IBM , Thomas J. Watson. He duly accepted the prestigious appointment and was subsequently instrumental in relocating the Endowment's headquarters to a site opposite the new United Nations headquarters building, with a Chase Bank branch on the ground floor.
For those who can still read, Google Alger Hiss and Thomas J. Watson -- and check into Mr. Carnegie while you are at it, to see his efforts to bring the US back into Union with Britain.
Also read up on David, who has lead a "way too intriguing life", in my opinion.

And as long as I am off on a bit of a digression --
here's this for your consideration.

And to all you "Progressives " out there , if you
want "Open Borders" , a "North American Union" and an overall leveling downward of the US and Canada's standard of living towards that of Mexico -- Dick Cheney has been working tirelessly for years on your behalf -- show some gratitude for the man.
Or perhaps you could decide that the Constitution and Sovereignty of the US is special and perhaps worth defending.
