Civil Liberties Groups, Scholars Urge Clinton to Grant Visa to Colombian Nieman Fellow
The State Department continues to deny a visa to a leading Colombian journalist, who won a Human Rights Watch award back in 2007.
His name is Hollman Morris. The Nieman Foundation at Harvard University invited him to campus next semester—he was one of 12 international journalists who got this honor. But Hillary Clinton won’t let him come and enjoy it.
The Progressive broke this story, on this website, back on June 29.
On July 13, the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Association of University Professors, and the PEN American Center sent a letter of protest to Secretary of State Clinton.
The letter notes that “Morris has traveled to the United States numerous times in the past.”
The organizations express their “alarm” at his visa denial.
They say it “projects a particularly visible and troubling message—a message that clearly does not accord with this Administration’s stated commitment to fostering a free exchange of information and ideas between the U.S. and the world.”
They ask Clinton to “review the exclusion of Hollman Morris as a matter of urgency, with an eye toward allowing him to join his colleagues at Harvard University in early September.”
