Hillary's Disreputable Closer

By Ruth Conniff, February 22, 2008

Not only did Hillary draw boos with her overblown plagiarism jab at Obama, then go on to commit plagiarism herself in what was supposed to be her finest moment in the debate, (see the YouTube video) she had the gall to invoke injured Iraq war vets who lost body parts in the war she voted for.

The pundits gave Clinton lots of points for her "valedictory" moment at the end of the debate. Talking about the hardships faced by the injured veterans of this terrible war brought the audience to its feet.

But scoring points by talking about the vets she met with their arms, legs, and faces blown off in this senseless war is a new low in political cynicism.

Hillary voted to authorize the war, refused to admit her mistake, and then tried to cover her tracks with the claim that she didn't know then what she knows now about the flimsy justifications for the invasion.

She also claims she always expected Bush to try more diplomacy first. If she had truly wanted to pursue diplomacy, she could have supported the Levin Amendment, which required the President to return to Congress before using force if diplomacy failed.

Hillary voted no.

She is partly responsible for the terrible cost of this war. To invoke the injured veterans now, after faiing to stand up when it mattered, is just plain disreputable.
