Bernie Sanders Demands Investigation of Banks

By Matthew Rothschild, January 30, 2009

Barack Obama may denounce the banks as “shameful,” but Bernie Sanders is the one who wants to go after them.

The Senator from Vermont is seeking subpoena power for the TARP Oversight Panel. And he wants it to investigate the collapse of the financial industry.

“Citizens—who as taxpayers bear the burden of supplying these bailouts for banks—have the right to know what went wrong in our system of finance,” he said in a Jan. 29 letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid.

“We need to examine what responsibility should be borne by individuals, corporations, and institutions for the poor decisions and foolish investments that have in large measure created this crisis.”
